PROFESSOR DR. CHRISTIAN SCHERTZ

Studied law in Berlin and Munich, completed legal training in Berlin and New York. From 1991 to 1993, worked in the legal department and administration of RIAS Berlin. Then became a research assistant at the Institute for Industrial Property and Copyright Law at Humboldt University in Berlin.

Doctorate in 1996 on issues relating to the commercial exploitation of personal rights (merchandising). From 1995 to 1999, he was a lecturer in press and media law at the Faculty of Law of the Humboldt University of Berlin. From 2000 to 2011, he was a lecturer in media law at the University of Film and Television in Potsdam Babelsberg, and in 2004 and 2006 he was also a lecturer in media law at the Free University of Berlin. Since 2008, Dr. Schertz has been a lecturer in media law at the Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition Law, and Media Law at the Technical University of Dresden. With effect from March 1, 2011, the Technical University of Dresden appointed Dr. Schertz as honorary professor for personality, press, and media law at the Faculty of Law. Winter semester 2012/2013 to winter semester 2016/2017 Lecturer in strategic legal communication at the Faculty of Law of Humboldt University in Berlin.

2018 Guest lecturer at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg. Since the summer semester of 2020, Christian Schertz has also been a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Potsdam in the field of press and media law. With effect from June 1, 2022, the University of Potsdam appointed Prof. Dr. Schertz as an honorary professor at the Faculty of Law in Potsdam. He has been a regular lecturer at the German Judicial Academy in Wustrau and Trier for many years. In 2020, Prof. Dr. Christian Schertz, together with Prof. Dr. Marcus Schladebach from the Faculty of Law at the University of Potsdam, became co-editor of the new series of publications "Studien zum Medienrecht" (Studies in Media Law) published by Duncker & Humblot.

From 1994, he worked as a lawyer specializing in press, copyright, and media law in Hamburg at the law firm Senfft, Kersten, Voss-Andrae & Schwenn, and from 1997 to the end of 2004 at the law firm Hertin in Berlin (as a partner from 1999 to 2004). In 2005, he founded his own law firm, Schertz Bergmann, together with Simon Bergmann. He advises numerous companies, publishers, and public figures in the field of press and personal rights. Another focus of his work is the entire spectrum of entertainment law, such as the negotiation of extensive artist, advertising, and publishing contracts.

Professor Dr. Schertz continues to be the editor, author, and co-author of numerous specialist books in the field of media law and regularly publishes articles on this subject in relevant specialist journals (ZUM, NJW, AfP).

Until 2010, he was deputy chairman of the Specialist Lawyers' Committee for Copyright and Media Law at the Berlin Bar Association, is an honorary member of the Joint Judicial Examination Office of the States of Berlin and Brandenburg (GJPA), and a member of the Friends of the German Film Academy.

Prof. Dr. Christian Schertz has been recommended for many years in the international reference work "Legal 500" for the field of "Media: Press and Publishing Law." Prof. Dr. Christian Schertz was named "Lawyer of the Year 2025" in the field of media and copyright law by Handelsblatt in cooperation with the US specialist publisher Best Lawyers.
