Prof. Dr. Christian Schertz, legal studies in Berlin and Munich, mandatory legal traineeship in Berlin and New York. 1991 - 1993 working in the legal and administrative department of RIAS Berlin. Research assistant at the Institute for Intellectual Property and Copyright Law (Institut für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht) at Humboldt Universität Berlin.

Doctoral thesis in 1996 focusing on the commercial evaluation of rights of privacy and publicity (merchandising). 1995 - 1999 lecturer for press and media law at the school of law of the Humboldt Universität Berlin. From 2000 until 2001visiting lecturer for media law at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Potsdam-Babelsberg and between 2004 and 2006 visiting lecturer for media law at the Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2008 Prof. Dr. Schertz is also visiting lecturer for media law at the Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition Law, and Media Law at the Technische Universität Dresden as well as external academic member of the institut's Research Center for New Media. Effective March 1st 2011, the Technische Universität Dresden appointed Prof. Dr. Schertz honorary professor for personality, press, and media law at the faculty of law.

From 1994 until 1997 practicing in Hamburg at the law firm Senfft, Kersten, Voss-Andrae & Schwenn, from 1997 until the end of 2004 at the law firm Hertin, Berlin (partner from 1999 until 2004). 2005 foundation of his own law firm Schertz Bergmann together with Simon Bergmann.

Prof. Dr. Schertz gives counsel to numerous corporations, publishing companies, celebrities and other high profile individuals in legal press matters and issues concerning rights of privacy and publicity. His practice also comprises the whole spectrum of entertainment law, such as negotiating extensive artist, advertising and publishing deals.

Prof. Dr. Schertz is furthermore publisher, author and co-author of numerous handbooks within the area of media law. He regularly publishes essays in relevant professional journals (ZUM, AfP, GRUR). Prof. Dr. Schertz is a member and contributor of Deutscher Medienrechtstag (DMRT) and of the German Association for Intellectual Property and Copyright Law (Deutsche Vereinigung für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht, GRUR). Until 2010 he was deputy chairman of the Commitee for Copyright and Media Law with the Berlin Bar Association; he is an honorary member of the Joint Law Students Examination Authority of Berlin and Brandenburg (Gemeinsames Justizprüfungsamt der Länder Berlin und Brandenburg, GJPA) and also member of the Friends of the German Film Academy (Freundeskreis der Deutschen Filmakademie).


Prof. Dr. Schertz is referred to in the international reference book "The Legal 500 Series" as "absolutely superb" and "very well connected" in the area of press and entertainment law.

JUVE Handbook Corporate Law Firms (Handbuch Wirtschaftskanzleien) 2004/2005 has listed Prof. Dr. Schertz wthin the category "leading names" for the areas of press/publishers as well as music law.
